HOLLYWOOD: THE REVENGE (New Scientist 11 March pg42)

Many companies are coming up with new ways to stop the increase of piracy. With advanced technology, programs have been installed in many pirated dvds and when inserted into dvd players, crashes will occur. Such an action will then deter a person from owning a pirated dvd.

In my opinion, piracy should be stopped as it discourages the creativity in the artistes. The decrease in sales of their dvds due to cheaper pirated ones would cause harm to their jobs.

In addition dvds are now much more affordable and we should be willing to pay a little more to appreciate the effort the artistes put in. As a result they would be motivated to create more quality films. This is because if may were to accept pirated goods, film's quality would be compromised to achieve a cheaper price.

I too agree that dvd piracy does discourage creativity of artists and should be stopped. However i beg to differ that the prices of dvds are becoming much more affordable. The prices of dvds are expensive, especially when they are first released, and it usually takes months before the price of a dvd starts to fall. Many people wait for such a long while before the dvds hit the stores and yet they have to wait again for the price of the dvd to fall to an affordable price, this is true for most teenagers and young adults who have yet to earn their first paycheck. Also i find it ridiculous at how much the actors get paid per movie. Thus i find it unreasonable to pay so much for their dvds and contribute to their already overflowing wealth when there are so many victims of poverty in the world who do not even get 3 meals a day. So sometimes i feel that i'd rather buy pirated dvds and give the money to the seller who is more in need of the money than those wealthy actors and producers.

i think that piracy is a bad thing, obviously because it is copying without permission the precious works of others. because i post some of my own work online, i hate it when people do not ask permission before using my work. so i can relate with how the artistes and movie crew feel when their effort seems to be wasted.

however viresh you have pointed out an interesting point as to the high prices and long waiting periods for DVDs. however, i would rather wait for the DVD because the pirated CD often has unwanted footage of people moving around and you can see their shadows on the screen etcetera. i'd rather not compromise quality for price. besides, if these pirates really wanted to earn money they should just get a job.

i have to give it to hollywood ! their idea of having DVD's which will prevent further piracy is a very good idea, and i believe with carefuk planning, it will be a success! for piracy to be stopped, people have to go to extreme measures for other people to listen .

Piracy is the theft of intellectual property and it is definitely wrong.

You are right in saying that piracy MUST be stopped. Or else it will stifle the development and growth of the creative arts.
